Dennis Kucinich Speaks at the Working Toward Peace Forum (Sat, May 13)

The Mt. Diablo Peace & Justice Center presents a Working Toward Peace Forum: The Economics of Peace and a U. S. Department of Peace and Nonviolence. Hear Congressman Dennis Kucinich speak and answer questions about the Department of Peace (House Resolution 3760).

Kucinich, who first introduced the Congressional legislation establishing a cabinet-level Department of Peace, will be joined on the platform by former Congressman Pete McCloskey. Judy Kimmel, Director of Development of The Peace Alliance, will introduce the speakers. Matthew Albracht, Managing Director of The Peace Alliance, and Mike Robbins, local motivational speaker, author, and coach, will also participate as panelists.

The particular emphasis of the forum will be on the economics of peace and on the practical considerations of nonviolent solutions to domestic and international conflict. Recent war expenditures have been more than $300 billion and the country is deep in debt because of this. There are many cost-effective, nonviolent ways of solving conflict and this forum will examine these.

Some questions that will be addressed:

  • What is the true cost of violence domestically and internationally?
  • What is the relation of violence to the deficit?
  • What would a Department of Peace add to our current government structure?
  • How would the future look different if we had a Department of Peace?

Co-sponsored by, Lamorinda Peace & Justice Group, The Peace Alliance, and Grandparents for Peace.

Meet Debra Bowen, Progressive Candidate for Secretary of State

Join East Bay for Democracy, East Bay Young Democrats, and Progressive Democrats of the East Bay in welcoming State Senator Debra Bowen, outstanding Democratic Candidate for California Secretary of State, to Oakland on Tuesday May 16th.

We'll socialize, enjoy light eats, and raise much needed funds for this awesome woman.

If you haven't yet met Senator Bowen you're in for a treat. With joy and verve, she held 90 progressive activists spell-bound at East Bay for Democracy's March meeting, with her wide-ranging knowledge of election issues and passion for making government transparent.

Debra Bowen insists on barring private ownership of our election systems, ensuring verifiable voting methods and keeping government open to and serving the people instead of special interests. This is our night to show her how much we value her. Together we will carry her to victory June 6th and again in November!
